The Great Kills area of Staten Island is primarily a residential area, with the single-family detached homes and duplexes being the most common form of housing. The area also has many townhome complexes.
The typically narrow lots in Great Kills mean that home configurations tend to extend back further from the street, with living spaces positioned over the road-facing garages.
The majority of homes for sale in Great Kills were built from the 1960s to the 1980s. As such, these homes represent the dominant architectural trends of the time - a form of modernism executed primarily in red brick and vinyl siding.
While the mid-to-late century modern look is common throughout Great Kills, some new traditional details are too. For example, decorative external shutters are widespread, and the area shows off its Dutch heritage with the prevalence of Dutch-style gambrel roofs. In fact, Great Kills shows a general trend towards unconventional roof shapes compared to other areas in New York.
Other areas, like the blocks immediately west of Miles Avenue, display a more conventional suburban look, with smaller homes in a variety of minimal new-traditional styles. These enclaves boast larger relative yard sizes, so the facades in Colonial, Tudor, and Cape Cod lie back from the road across spacious green lawns.
Most homes in Great Kills are below 2000 square feet in size, yet there is a wide selection of larger homes. Many of the larger homes in Great Kills are split-level detached homes, with full basements, large rear decks.
