You may have heard this story in the news—single, full-time working mom of four, Cara Brookins, recently built her own house using YouTube videos.

After seeing the barest framework of a 3,500-square-foot home that had been destroyed by a tornado, Brookins thought, "I bet I could put this back up." And with the day-and-night help of her four children and a video streaming website, she did.

They got loans to cover the cost of supplies, like construction tools, and the rest came from their DIY efforts.

Are you considering building your own home? No wonder—some sources cite that you can make your own place for less than $35,000. So, why wouldn't you?

Before embarking on this challenging, yet rewarding, project, make sure you have at least the following tools in your inventory.

1. Measuring Tape

Having incorrect measurements can ruin an entire home-building project from the foundation up.

Builders use carefully-calculated measurements to ensure everything makes sense—even, say, the height of the cabinets in the bathroom or the length of a particular wall in the living room. Take detailed measurements for everything.

2. Hand Saw

You'll likely need many types of saws, including a table saw, but don't underestimate the need for smaller ones, like the hand saw.

This tool is perfect for cutting wood in a pinch. Whether that's for a door frame, a slab panel, or a window, a hand saw can cut through many types of wood easily—especially more delicate pieces.

3. Safety Gear

Yes, this counts as construction tools! In fact, this is arguably one of the more essential things you could have on-site.

Safety gear is there to protect you and workers from the expected and unexpected.

Safety gear includes things like gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, a safety helmet, and rubber boots. Cara Brookins, the mom from the story, originally wore old tennis shoes with plastic bags around them instead of boots—don't make that same mistake. Protect yourself!

4. Garbage Removal Service

You may not consider this a tool in the home-building process, but you'd be surprised to see how much trash, debris, and junk comes with this type of project.

Many companies offer dirt cheap rubbish removal, and this is all but mandatory when doing building construction. These services provide an oversized storage bin for you to put things like plasterboard, carpet, metal, trees, branches, rocks, bushes—anything and everything you could think of.

Having these items contained promotes a cleaner, more organized, and safe work environment.

Do You Have These Construction Tools?

Building your own house isn't easy, but as Cara Brookins, the mom-turned-home-builder says, it's worth it.

Being able to stand in front of your home and say, "I built this," well—not much can compare.

These are a few of the many construction tools you'll need to get the job done, so be sure to research thoroughly and remember to expect delays, surprises, and errors. That's all part of the process!
