The name "Todt Hill" is derived from the Dutch word for "death," which was fitting given the number of Indian burial grounds that dotted the landscape. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, a new resident came to Todt Hill and left his mark on the area in a very different way. His name was Ernest Flagg, and he was an architect.

Flagg was born in Brooklyn in 1857 and quickly made a name for himself in the world of architecture. He designed a number of famous buildings, including the Singer Building in New York City. In 1898, he completed his most famous work: his personal estate in Todt Hill. The 20,000+ square foot mansion was the centerpiece of an awe-inspiring estate that also included a water tower, carriage house, gatehouse, and more.

For years, the Ernest Flagg Estate was one of Staten Island's most popular tourist attractions.

You can find the Ernest Flagg Estate in Todt Hill on Staten Island. Ernest Flagg, a well-known architect, constructed the mansion in the early 1900s. Aside from the main house and carriage house, the estate also features a private road named Flagg Court. Even though the estate was redeveloped in the 1980s, the houses on Flagg Court are still in keeping with Ernest Flagg's original aesthetic.

The Gatehouse and Gate at the Ernest Flagg House are part of a larger complex that is a magnificent example of the Dutch Colonial revival style. In 1898, Ernest Flagg, then the largest landowner on Staten Island, built his own home, which he named "nstone Court." The mansion, which has 32 rooms, was originally roofed in slate but now sports shingles. The main body of the mansion is flanked on either side by two equally sized dependencies, each of which has two stories. The Society of St. Charles now owns the mansion, gatehouse, and other structures on the fourteen-acre estate, and uses them to house a seminary. Nearly fifty years ago, architect Ernest Flagg developed Flagg Ridge Estates in Dongan Hills. The Island homes he planned and constructed reflect his years of education in Paris as well as his own creativity. The Greeks provided Flagg with the basis for the module system of fixed measure he used in his work. He perfected the art of form-building by way of his residences on the islands. A completed foundation wall was then outfitted with Wbod sleepers, crosspieces, and uprights. The form was constructed from rock, and then a cement mixture was poured around the various components. There was more than a foot of finished wall. Flagg is credited with creating the plans for the Singer Building, the city of New York's first significant skyscraper. Both the Corcoran Art Gallery and St. Luke's Hospital on llOth Street in Washington, D.C. were designed by him. c., let alone the structures of the United Nations. s. The United States Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland.
