Bulls Head History
It would be hard to talk about Bulls Head without looking at its rich, 250-year history. This West Shore community was originally called "Phoenixville", a name that came from the series of fires that ravaged the homes in the area at the time, years after the Revolutionary War. During the war however, tens of thousands of British troops had set up command posts throughout Staten Island. The headquarters for the British loyalist political party called the Tories was setup inside an infamous tavern called "The Bulls Head Tavern". The notoriety of this headquarters for being a safe haven for British Troops, housing began to steadily develop in the area. The neighborhood eventually changed its name to Bulls Head, to reflect its desirability for sanctity and prestige.
