It has been recently announced that New York City and New York State have secured federal funding for $400 million in federal funds to build the long-awaited seawall on Staten Island’s East Shore. Total estimated cost of this project is $615 million. This area was devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The New York Times quoted that 24 of the 48 New York City residents killed were on Staten Island. This new seawall is expected to protect Staten Island’s eastern coast from strong storms like Sandy that could produce dangerous flooding. Remaining costs not covered by Federal funding will be footed by New York State which will contribute approximately $150 million and New York City which will contribute approximately $65 million.
Expected to span from Fort Wadsworth to Oakwood Beach, the plan consists of a series of levees, berms, and seawalls stretching 5.3 miles. The wall will be up to 20 feet above sea level in areas. Natural wetlands are also part of the grand scheme. Designs for the wall will include a promenade that features a boardwalk with bike and running lanes along with beach access. Future plans for this project include outdoor concerts and events, making it a tourist destination.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is quoted saying "This innovative project will protect Staten Islanders from future devastating storms, enhance access to the shore, create thriving wetlands and bring peace of mind to the diverse communities that live along the coastline". Mayor Bill de Blasio called the project "a huge win for the people of Staten Island". Congressman Max Rose stated: “This agreement will finally allow construction so Staten Island families can get some relief before the next storm season—but until we pass the easement into law and construction is complete, there’s more work to be done. Assemblyperson Nicole Malliotakas summed it up by saying“After decades of fear and waiting, the people of Staten Island’s shoreline communities will soon be receiving the protection they need and deserve,” “This is a true testament to all three levels of government working together.”
When this seawall is finally completed Staten Island residents on the East Shore who were affected by Superstorm Sandy will not only experience peace of mind with the new safety and protection the seawall project will bring but should eventually realize some savings by reduced Flood Insurance rates.
