Origin of Pizza
Flatbreads have been around for thousands of years and are enjoyed in many different cultures. The earliest known flatbreads come from the ancient Mediterranean, including focaccia, manakish, coca, pita, lepinja, and piadina. These breads can be either sweet or savory, and are often served with cheese, meats, vegetables, and spices.
In 16th-century Naples, a galette flatbread was referred to as a pizza. It wasn't until the Spanish brought the tomato from the Americas and developed the modern variation that pizzas in their current form were invented. The first "Pizza Margherita" was created in 1889 to honor the queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy.
Pizza has since evolved into a variety of bread and tomato dishes, often served with cheese. Today, pizzas are enjoyed all over the world and come in many different forms.
